Hong Kong takes a hard line on kratom, [reported as] the ‘herbal heroin’…

Hong Kong has outlawed kratom… users and advocates argue the substance is more beneficial than harmful and stress that no death so far has been blamed solely on kratom abuse.

Long used in traditional medicines… Hong Kong took a hard line on August 13 [2021], when it added two active ingredients in kratom – mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine – to the list of banned substances under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance. Those found guilty of trafficking in these substances or manufacturing them face a maximum penalty of a HK$5 million (US$641,800) fine and life imprisonment. Possession and consumption of the substances have also become criminal offences.
