….advocate for end-of-life psilocybin exemption dies after 10-year cancer battle
That special exemption from the federal government meant Thomas Hartle could grow them for personal use, which helped relieve the anxiety that had weighed on him since his diagnosis and let him focus on enjoying time with his wife and two children…. Hartle did not plan to become an advocate, but he embraced the role – and the challenge – for nearly a decade.
In 2020, Hartle was one of four Canadians with terminal health conditions who were allowed by Health Canada to use psilocybin… he became the first known Canadian to legally take psychedelic mushrooms in the country… “Making the history was never really my motivation on this. I absolutely assure you, I’ve been doing this for some very selfish reasons, like not feeling anxiety,” he joked during a 2020 interview. “For me, daily anxiety was literally robbing me of (a) tremendous part of my life … I have got so much of my life and my time back.”
