[Matthew] Johnson also accused Griffiths of infusing his research with his own spiritual beliefs and advancing a political agenda aimed at spreading the use of psychedelics. All this, Johnson said, created a “cult-like atmosphere.” Not everyone involved with the study subscribes to such beliefs. Johnson, the former protégé who filed the ethics complaints, thinks the findings have been exaggerated and taken out of context. “Some people want to see the results as validating the Perennial Philosophy,” he says. “But it can’t.”
