Psychedelics paid for by work? It’s coming
The suite of benefits your company offers may one day look like this: vision, dental, 401(k) match and psychedelic-assisted therapy for mental health. A small but growing number of companies are already offering that last one… offering psychedelic benefits to employees is still in its infancy, but it is increasingly seen as a potential way to improve workers’ mental health and stem costs over time.
Yant says he thinks that the U.S. healthcare system is too focused on prescribing drugs and that some of his employees could benefit from psychedelic therapy, resulting in lower costs over time and a happier, more productive workforce. He started considering covering alternative therapies after reviewing anonymized summary reports of prescription drug use within the company. “The use of antidepressants among my employees and their families was off the charts,” he says. Peter Barsoom, CEO… [of] a cannabis company, had already covered the cost of ketamine-infusion treatments for two employees out of his own pocket: one was suffering from chronic back pain and another was going through a difficult life transition… Barsoom signed up so all 40 people who work for him could partake in the treatment if they choose. He is comfortable with his employees using it at home, so long as it is under the guidance of a doctor.
