Timothy Brewerton, clinical professor of psychiatry and behavioural sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina says: ‘What’s unique to MDMA is the oxytocin system (AKA the ‘love hormone’ – the stuff that makes you feel all loved up and happy when you’re around people you like).
The point is that eating disorders are essentially mental health conditions, with physical symptoms – and so MDMA might be a way of getting at the primary illness first, which then might help battle the physical one. There aren’t any real medications out there for battling EDs, so all things being well, this MDMA-psychotherapy could be a new lifeline for sufferers.
