Here’s another… under-studied prospect of psychedelics: a world without severe chronic pain.
And… around the internet or psychedelic conferences, a whole subterranean trove of similar stories opens up. An estimated 51 million Americans suffer from chronic pain – excruciating conditions like migraines, phantom limb pains, or fibromyalgia – and often go without effective treatments. But psychedelics like psilocybin mushrooms and LSD seem to offer serious relief. At least, to people who have access… doctors being able to legally prescribe psychedelics for chronic pain will likely take years… that’s time a lot of people don’t have; the depth of pain in these communities is nearly impossible to imagine… [I want to help understand how to effectively use cannabis and psilocybin as potential tools for pain management… lethal overdoses from cannabis are almost unheard of. This is remarkable considering that nearly 50 million Americans use it each year… a group of cannabis and pain specialists published a proposed guideline for clinical practice in early 2024 to synthesize existing evidence and help guide clinical practice. This guideline recommended that cannabis products be used when pain is coupled with sleep problems, muscle spasticity and anxiety. These multiple benefits mean that cannabis could potentially help people avoid taking a separate medication for each symptom… like cannabis, psilocybin has minimal risk of lethal overdose… there are few published clinical trials of psilocybin therapy for chronic pain, although many are ongoing, including a pilot study for fibromyalgia conducted by… team at the University of Michigan.]
