Blumenauer hopes to curb fentanyl imports with Import Security and Fairness Act
A bill in Congress is being proposed to address the fentanyl crisis by curbing the import of the drug through uninspected and untaxed packages.
Congressman Earl Blumenauer introduced the bill attempting to close a loophole that was first created in 1930 – called the Tariff Act of 1930. Blumenauer is hoping to take action to limit the amount of fentanyl being sent to the U.S. through unchecked and untaxed packages. He said what’s called the De Minimis loophole allows millions of packages, with a value of $800 or less, into the country every day with little scrutiny from Customs and Border Protection. Blumenauer said increasingly, those packages have fentanyl and precursor chemicals to make the drug.
