Peter Thiel-backed psychedelics… brain-control interface… techno-libertarians… who want to live forever… praying for dystopia
Would you like to live forever? Some billionaires, already invincible in every other way, have decided that they also deserve not to die. If you believed that the necessary next step in our species’ evolution was to merge with artificial superintelligence, and to thereby transcend our animal condition and become immortal, what effect might that have on your politics? Dark Transhumanists, as for the neo-reactionaries from whom they take their cues, egalitarianism is inherently incompatible with any posthuman future. Take Peter Thiel, the Facebook investor who in a 2009 essay for the libertarian journal Cato Unbound announced, “I no longer believe that freedom and democracy are compatible.”
Peter Thiel [who collaborates with Christian Angermayer) is a techno-libertarian who has long sought to cease simply being a rhetorical immortal… and become an actual one… he’s a big proponent of humanity reaching the technological singularity, a hypothesised future where scientific progress attains an exponential, irreversible pace, resulting in things like the creation of digital superintelligences or the elimination of the distinction between humans and machines. This would presumably also allow him to live forever, so long as that brain-control interface gets made. [But consider] men who hope to live forever might pause on their eternal journey to consider the frightening void at invincibility’s core. Death is the ultimate vulnerability. It is the moment when all of us must confront exactly what so many women have known all too well: You are a body, only a body, and nothing more.
