In the first quarter of 2018, 14.8% of the cocaine tested at the three state crime labs had fentanyl or a fentanyl analog in it. Carfentanil was laced into 4.2% of cocaine … The overdose death epidemic no longer skews to low-income whites. The state’s entire illegal drug supply — except marijuana — is contaminated. 

Heroin users, in particular — are not to blame for the overdose death epidemic. The danger of the drug supply — unrelated to the number of drug users — is driving deaths. Fentanyl test strips and other forms of drug-checking should be implemented immediately as an emergency public health measure. The death of a Greek billionaire’s son in Cleveland from fentanyl-laced cocaine has attracted attention. Yesterday, the CDC director said his son suffered a near-fatal overdose from fentanyl-laced cocaine.
