DEA… counterfeit pill “surge” following its crackdown on prescriptions

Experts say women, low-income people and people in rural areas are disproportionately affected by the prescribing crackdown. The same goes for people of color and Black people especially, who are more likely have their pain dismissed by doctors or be profiled as a drug addict or dealer due to stigma and racism.

“We can confirm that law enforcement, the DEA and insurance companies all have access to patient information that they use to target to the highest prescribers,” Claudia Merandi, an advocate for pain patients, said, arguing that drug police should not be able to access to sensitive patient data without a court order. “That’s new, we didn’t know that was happening a few years ago.”
