Oregon lawmakers reach tentative deal on drug punishment, Measure 110 changes
A new type of misdemeanor that previously didn’t exist in Oregon… open drug use without consequences could be a thing of the past in Oregon… Democrats and Republican lawmakers in the Oregon Legislature announced a tentative agreement Thursday [2/22/24] on how much to recriminalize possession of small amounts of drugs.
Upon sentencing, a judge would have to offer probation with no jail time, but if that’s violated, the offender could face anywhere between on to six months in jail; and pre-jail diversion will only be offered in some counties that opt in. If the bill passes, the new misdemeanor takes effect on Sept. 1. [2024] The ACLU of Oregon said it has “serious concerns” about the bill. “Oregon’s legislative leadership is digging a deep, unconscionable, and costly trench of human suffering by recriminalizing Oregonians experiencing drug addiction,” it wrote in a letter to lawmakers.
