Several women… said the psychedelic community was slow to show concern over the risk of sexual abuse.

Tourists who travel to countries where psychedelics are permitted are also at risk by virtue of being in a new place with an unfamiliar culture, language, and legal system. Many psychedelics lower inhibition and create a sense of interpersonal intimacy; ayahuasca retreats in the Amazon, for example, are rife with accusations of sexual assault and rape. [In the United States and Canada], alongside the potential benefits, psychedelic therapy also carries a serious risk of sexual abuse. Patients in psychedelic therapy are intensely vulnerable.
